I lay down, listening to the water rippling beneath the boat, and knew that I
was going my way. I thought: although there is such a barrier between Jun-tu and
myself, the children still have much in common, for wasn't Hung-erh thinking of
Shui-sheng just now?
I hope they will not he like us, that they will not allow a barrier to grow up between the hem. But again I would not like them, because they
want to be akin, all to have a treadmill existence like mine, nor to suffer like
Jun-ru until they become stupefied, nor yet, like others, to devote all their
energies to dissipation. They should have a new life, a life we have never
experienced.
