I was 15 years old when the war started... I remember my sisters and mother being sad as my Pa and older brother left to go fight one month after the war started. My pa had told me to be strong and take care of my family just like he had been teaching me since I was old enough to understand. I sat there on the front porch watching my older brother and Pa leave until my Ma came out and said Sugar, you need to come inside I need your help. It was so obvious Ma didn't want to see him go. Yes Ma'am I'm coming. As I walk inside Ma tells me what she needs help with. Ethan, I need ya to help your sisters wash up for supper, then help get it on the table. Yes Ma, I'll get the wash bucket. Hurry dear, supper should be ready in a few minutes. Yes Ma'am, I'll hurry. I practically run out back to the well to get some water, when my little sister Salina comes running out.
ETHAN! ETHAN! Rose fell, Ma thinks she has broken her leg. She needs you to get the doctor now. HURRY!! I set off running to the doctors house, I knock on the door shouting... Doctor! Salina fell. Ma thinks Salina's leg is broken. I'm coming don't worry. Dr. Brown rushed out of his house and grabbed a saddled horse. A few minutes later the horse was in full gallop towards my house. I stand there for minutes then take off running towards the house. I step onto the front porch and sit down a minute to catch my breath before going inside. Stepping across the threshold I'm greeted by my little sister Salina. Ethan, Ma wants ya to finish puttin' dinner on the table. Oh, and put extra plate on the table. I nodded and turned to do what Ma told me to do. When we finished dinner Ma asked Salina and I to clean the kitchen. While she talked with the doctor. An hour or so after we finished my sister and I were sitting by the fire reading. Ma came into tell us that we should probably go to bed. I nod just realizing how tired I really am. I stood up to give her a hug and kiss good night. As I left the room i heard Salina saying good night Ma. I walked into my room, which looked bare and lonely since my older brother left. Laying down in my bed I pray that God will keep my brother and Pa safe during the up coming battles they might be in.
